(<strong style=\"color: red\">Do not rush into reading the Bible without starting with prayers!<\/strong>) (e.g., you may start with a simple prayer like this: &#8220;Dear Lord, what will you be speaking to me today?)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong style=\"color: blue\">Scripture Reading<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Get the following items ready in advance: your devotional notebook, paper, pen, and\/or electronic devotional articles so that you can easily write down the Bible verses, questions, and thoughts you have noticed! You are encouraged to open your Bible and vocally read out the scriptures (Try to practice this reading method daily or once a week)!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Scripture Reading: Luke Ch. 14 (ESV)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong style=\"color: blue\">Meditation<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Take a moment to quietly reflect on today&#8217;s Scriptures. Through such exercises, let God&#8217;s Word be gradually written into our hearts and be inscribed to our mind.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong style=\"color: blue\">Devotional<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Read the devotional articles prepared by CBCLWA (<strong style=\"color: red\">*Read the Bible first before reading any devotional materials.<\/strong>)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">(vv. 1-6)\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">This is what happened when\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">a ruler of the Pharisees invited\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Jesus\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">to eat at his house.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Not only did Jesus<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0he<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">al a person suffering from dro<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">psy<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">, but\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">he also asked two\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">seemingly\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">dichotomous\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">questions\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">to<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0those<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0keeping a close watch on him<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">:\u00a0<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">&#8220;Is it\u00a0<\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">lawful to heal on<\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0the Sabbath<\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">, or not<\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">?&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">and<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cWhich of you, having a son<\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u202f<\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">or an ox that has fallen into a well on a Sabbath day, will not immediately pull him out?\u201d<\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">However,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">none of the people at the scene responded. It can be\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">observed that<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0in\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">their hearts, they actually held<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0a\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">double standard: they<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">did\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">things on the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0Sabbath, but Jesus could not<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0heal the sick on the Sabbath.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:1,&quot;335559738&quot;:120,&quot;335559739&quot;:120,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">These poignant questions illustrate<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">a typical double standard. When others make\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">mistakes<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">we\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">use the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0narrow<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">lens of a microscope to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">see<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">their<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0mistakes, and when we make\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0mistake<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">, we\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">use<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0the wide lens of<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0a telescope<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0to<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">see our\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">mistakes<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">. Today, try to reflect on this point<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">. If you invite Jesus to eat at<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0home someday, would he not<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0also\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">point out the mistakes you have\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">made?!<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:1,&quot;335559738&quot;:120,&quot;335559739&quot;:120,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">(<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">vv.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">7-11) At<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0the same meal, because the host<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0saw the invited guests,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">he chose<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0someone to sit in the place of honor<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0at the table\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">(in Jesus\u2019 time, the closer you were to the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0owner, the higher the position<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">)<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0Jesus took the opp<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">ortunity to tell all\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">of\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">the guests a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0parable. This parable<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">does not mean that we rush to lower our status\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">sit in the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0least honorable<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0position first; and after this,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0wait for someone to invite us<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0to the place of honor<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">so that we will<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0be glorified<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">. In fact, the true value of man i<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">s calculated in the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0eyes of God.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">The last sentence<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0of verse 11 reflects this point:<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">&#8220;<\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">For<\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u202f<\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.\u201d<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">This verse does not mean t<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">hat you rush to the least honorable place<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0hoping all will see that you are humble when in fact, you want to be exalted. God sees your heart.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Nor does it mean that we live a life of extreme inferiority. We can compare the scriptures describing Satan (Isaiah 14:12-14) and Jesus (Philippians 2:6-11):<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:1,&quot;335559738&quot;:120,&quot;335559739&quot;:120,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">(Isaiah 14:12-14)\u00a0<\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cHow<\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u202f<\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">you are fallen from heaven,<\/span><\/b><br \/>\n<b><span data-contrast=\"none\">O Day Star,<\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u202f<\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">son of Dawn!<\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">How you are cut down to the ground,<\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">you who laid the nations low! The way of t<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">rue humility\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">is to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">humble<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0your heart<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">, respect God, and know your own place<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">by\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">following Jesus\u2019 example.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">We need to return to God from time to time to see our\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">true\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">value clearly, to think abou<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">t our original outlook<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">nd our current status.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">What am I<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">most\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">proud of<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0that can bring me anything or\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">take me\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">anywhere?<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:1,&quot;335559738&quot;:120,&quot;335559739&quot;:120,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">(vv. 12-24)\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">While reading this verse, I felt very convicted because\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">when dining with my brothers and sisters in Christ,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">I\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">would always think in my heart: We ar<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">e eating in the kingdom of God and we are so blessed!\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Regardless of those who\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">mak<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">e excuses to decline invitations to the banquet, the Lord&#8217;s heart is clear &#8211;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0it is\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">with\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">the\u00a0<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">&#8220;poor, disabled, lame, blind&#8230;&#8221;<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&#8211; those who cannot reciprocate and<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0those who were originally uninvited.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:1,&quot;335559738&quot;:120,&quot;335559739&quot;:120,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The wedding banquet of Christ and the banquet in heaven are really for those who are poor<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0in spirit<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0and<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0of the lowest rung<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0of society<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">. When we are\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">blessed\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">enough to be part<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">akers at the banquet<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">, can we see<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0more of those who have not yet attended the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">banquet\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">because of the empty seats beside us\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">at the table?\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Pray for the Lord to use us!<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:1,&quot;335559738&quot;:120,&quot;335559739&quot;:120,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">(vv. 25-35) Fr<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">om the scene of\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">gathering to eat<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0together<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0to the road<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">, walking alongside<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0Jesus, the scriptures say that there are a lot of people following Jesus. Jesus used the parables of\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">constructing\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">a building<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">and fighting\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">a war<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0to ask\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">as the Lord\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">did.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Jesus taught<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">people to calculate the cost<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">of\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">following him first. Otherwise, the person<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">might\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">retreat halfway through<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0their<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">spiritual\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">journey<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">like salt that has lost its flavor and is of no use<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">. We can easily understand this<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">b<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">ut, when\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Jesus wants his followers to &#8220;hate&#8221; (meaning from the original text) his relatives an<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">d\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">even\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">his own life<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">, people may<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0respond<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0with dismay<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">!<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:1,&quot;335559738&quot;:120,&quot;335559739&quot;:120,&quot;335559740&quot;:360}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">In fact, Christians should\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">love others well,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0including our<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0ow<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">n family members.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">This is a given.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">It is<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0becaus<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">e of Jesus that our identities have<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0become the children of God. Our\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">own relatives will gradually not recognize our values \u200b\u200band priorities in life.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">It is difficult for them to understand our newfound identity<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0in Christ<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">, and i<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">t may even be possible for others to view them\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">as strange\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">because of their relationship to us<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Others\u2019\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">viewpoints have<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0caused pressure in the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0relationship between our relatives<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0and us<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">. This is the &#8220;hate&#8221; Jesus is talking about here. I believe that this is extremely challenging for everyone<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0who wants to be a disciple!
